News

Well, I'm in Florida, far from home, hogging somebody's wireless connection to post this.

The Glossing Tool pre-release installer is now available. You can download it from http://ubs-icap.org:8080/confluence/download/attachments/9456/GlossingToolSetup0.63g.exe (just as soon as I get permissions opened for you to do so). Give me a day to work out the permissions with Jeff and you should be good to try it out.

Send bug reports to glossing@ubs-icap.org. They'll get added to the bug tracker and copied to me.

Thanks for your long patience!

Shalom,

If you want to prepare for the Glossing Tool, the first thing you should do is download Microsoft's .NET 2.0 Runtime, also called .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable.

The next Paratext CD will include this crucial software, but in the meantime, you can download it. Today it's 22.4 MB.

How do you get .NET 2.0:

General: Google for ".NET runtime 2.0".

Site: Generally, check the Microsoft download site for this and other goodies: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. (Careful: you will also see .NET 1.1. We recommend installing .NET 2.0 instead because the Concordance Tool and the next version of Glossing Tool will require 2.0. If you already have 1.1 on your computer, you don't have to uninstall it.)

Specific Page: This can change, but on 21-MAR-2006, you could fine .NET 2.0 here.

After too much time, the Glossing Tool pre-release is nearly ready. It is mostly aimed at people helping write the first manual and help.

Little has changed on the surface: no glossing bugs fixed, no features added.

Substantial work has been done, though, to make ways to install the program, to catch errors in ways that will help us fix them, to change where files are stored, and to make the Glossing Tool live well alongside other tools that use its linguistics engine (like the Concordance project now underway).

Brad Olson is beginning active work refining the Glossing Tool now.

Preliminary work won't produce anything new and exciting for field users, I'm sorry to say. But it will accomplish some important things, such as incorporating files created by the Glossing Tool into the Paratext directory structure and introducing some error logging and reporting.
