Welcome

The Institute for Computer Assisted Publishing (ICAP) is an initiative sponsored by the United Bible Societies designed to provide support for the translation and scripture publishing community in 3 main areas.

Facilitate the building of a global CAP community.
Educate CAP service providers and trainers for UBS.
Develop tools to support the translation and publishing process.

Facilitate the building of a global CAP community

Here we see the emergence of a real community of developers, facilitators and operators providing support to the global translation and scripture publishing life cycle through participation in workshops, seminars and institutes. CBS Translations-CAP facilitates this community building process by helping to identify and connect the key people and hosting various workshops, seminars and institutes. Regional task teams and CAP coordinators play key roles as institute staff with TPCRG acting as the governance body.
In addition to the real community, we also envision the emergence of a virtual community connected electronically through the Internet collaboration facilities. CBS Translations-CAP again plays a role as web developer and host, intranet facilitator, and discussion forum convenor for a variety of communications around issues of tools development and training.

Educate CAP service providers and trainers for UBS

Here we envision ICAP helping in the development of curricula and the delivery of a variety of educational experiences that will serve to foster and empower a company of CAP providers throughout the UBS fellowship. We think of this as a localization of learning and deployment for computer assisted support for the translation and scripture publishing life cycle. Training will be provided electronically as well as on site through seminars, work camps, and apprenticeships.

Develop tools to support the translation and publishing process

Here ICAP facilitates the development of tools as a convenor of teams. An example of this role would be the development of the USFM markup standard. We expect that ICAP will provide leadership in the deployment of tools and facilitating the training needed to ensure their effective use in the translation and scripture publishing life cycle.
